Bengaluru got the moniker ‘Garden City’ not because of Lalbagh but because of the gardens in the compounds of numerous bungalows and houses. When urban land ceiling was imposed in 1976, those gardens became victims of the legislation; many owners subdivided their land to save it from acquisition by the government. Then came builders and developers, and Bengaluru was never the same. Gone were the gardens. Some of the old houses that remain are described in the book.

INTACH has been conducting heritage walks in Bengaluru for quite some time. For the general reader who is interested in knowing about the heritage and history of Bengaluru, but who might not be able to participate in the walks, this book is for you.
