Hulkamania. The word that sums up 1980s WWF like no other. Between 1985 and 1992 Coliseum Video released six tapes devoted to Hulk Hogan. Matches, interviews, angles and exclusive video features – these tapes were love letters from Vince McMahon to Hulk Hogan.

I’ve watched all six and this book is the result. Every match is reviewed, every angle is analysed and everything else is recapped, debated and put into some sort of context. All with a healthy dose of history and humour. As with my Year in Pro Wrestling series, I’ll be adding all sorts of background information and jokes to tell not just the stories they want you to see but also the stories they want you to forget.

Each tape is a time capsule preserving how they wanted you – the fans – to see Hulk Hogan at moment. Over the years it changes from a superstar athlete to a religious figure. Just as Darth Vader became more machine than man, so Hulk Hogan gradually became more Hulkamania than human.

Amongst so much else, this book will include:

• Hogan’s entendre-laced protein shake segment from TNT which made Alfred Hayes throw up
  
• Hogan’s clean victory over the Undertaker months before the Gravest Challenge which could’ve killed the Dead Man’s career if Coliseum Video wasn’t its own universe
  
• Hogan mocking the sexuality of Adrian Adonis, the Genius, Jesse Ventura, Brutus Beefcake and even Sensational Sherri
  
• Hogan and Savage having essentially the same match on three different cassettes, in three different countries
  
• The genesis of Hogan's legendary feuds with Mr Wonderful and Andre the Giant (including the smallest plaster in wrestling history and the angriest promo ever cut at a bunch of flowers)

  I’ve also been through all the arena results from 1984 to 1993 to give a flavour for Hogan’s work away from the TV cameras. Who was he working with and when did he go from facing random challenger X to having long programs with a single opponent? Which astonishing name was his tag team partner on his first tour of Japan as WWF champion?

  Love him or hate him, Hulk Hogan was the centrepiece of the WWF for over eight years and these tapes are our best way of capturing the contemporary Hulkster. A modern 4-disc DVD box set can give us more footage but it is all presented through the prism of nostalgia.
