In 2008 we travelled around Australia towing a caravan, exploring all the popular tourist destinations, in true grey nomad style, Toyota Landcruiser and 21’ Caravan. Our journey took us through Queensland, the Northern Territory to Darwin, it was an inspiring awakening, the distances, scenery and diversity of towns, many of which were mining communities showed a world foreign to us, it was an eye-opening experience.
From Darwin we travelled down the west coast, exploring each area and seeing firsthand the enormity of mining operations, rail and road networks crisscrossed the landscape, most leading to huge seaports. The infrastructure aligned to mining operations that has seen massive housing estates and shopping complexes developed. From Perth we travelled south around the bottom of the state through to the Nullarbor Plain back home to Tumut.
It was during this trip that we realised the limitations of towing a caravan, dirt roads and inquisitive explorations into wilderness areas an impossibility, and with a deep-seated desire to get into some of the remote outback regions of the state, such as the Gibb River Road, the waterfalls of the Mitchell Plateau, then northwest to the remote Kalumburu could only be done with a reliable vehicle, in our case a Toyota Landcruiser 200 series and a Track-Trailer camper, purpose built for the military. We also knew this would be our last trip to the west.
This adventure was totally different to any of our other caravan forays, we spent a lot of time off bitumen, mainly on gravel roads and bush tracks, some of which were a real test of machine, and my driving skills, particularly getting to specific remote outback locations. We had an emergency locator beacon, comprehensive first aid kit and essential tools and spares. We were fully equipped to be away from civilisation for up to two weeks at a time; our enemy was dust and corrugations.
This book was compiled by writing a daily log of each day’s activities, it has been stored on a portable hard drive for the past nine years and has now become the book “OUR WESTERN AUSTRALIAN OUTBACK ADVENTURE”.
