New Iceland And The Colonization Of The Canadian West
When we think of the Canadian West, we often imagine vast landscapes, stunning natural beauty, and a rich history of exploration and settlement. One lesser-known chapter of this history is the story of New Iceland, a unique Icelandic settlement that played a significant role in the colonization of the Canadian West.
The Journey
In the late 19th century, a group of Icelandic immigrants seeking new opportunities embarked on a challenging journey across the Atlantic Ocean. They left behind their homeland, motivated by the promise of abundant farmland in North America. After a long and arduous journey, these brave settlers arrived in the Dominion of Canada.
However, the Canadian government had promised them fertile land that was suitable for agriculture, which turned out to be false. As a result, many Icelanders faced disappointment and struggled to establish a new life in this foreign land. Nevertheless, they persevered and eventually found a place to call home in what is now Manitoba.

A New Beginning: The Settlement of New Iceland
In 1875, the Icelandic settlers established their own colony, which they named "New Iceland." It was located on the southwestern shores of Lake Winnipeg, an area that offered the resources needed for survival, including fish and wildlife. The settlers worked hard to build homes, cultivate crops, and create a self-sustaining community.
The colonists faced numerous challenges due to the harsh Canadian winters and the limited infrastructure. However, they persevered through their strong sense of community and their Icelandic cultural heritage, which helped them maintain their identity and traditions in their new surroundings.
The Impact on Western Canada
The settlement of New Iceland had a profound impact on the development of Western Canada. The Icelandic settlers brought with them valuable knowledge and skills in agriculture, fishing, and cooperative societies. They played a pivotal role in introducing new farming techniques and improving crop yields in the region.
Moreover, the Icelanders' experience in creating a self-governing community led to the formation of the first elected municipal government in Western Canada. This was a significant milestone in the region's history, as it set the groundwork for democratic governance that would later be adopted by other communities.
New Iceland Today
Although New Iceland no longer exists as a distinct colony, its legacy lives on in the Manitoba region. The descendants of the original settlers continue to celebrate their Icelandic heritage and maintain strong cultural ties with Iceland. Icelandic festivals, folklore, and traditions are still vibrant in the area, showcasing the lasting impact of this unique settlement.
Today, visitors can explore the history of New Iceland through various museums and heritage sites, such as the New Iceland Heritage Museum. These museums offer a glimpse into the challenges faced by the early settlers and the contributions they made to the development of Western Canada.
The story of New Iceland and the colonization of the Canadian West is a testament to the resilience, determination, and cultural pride of the Icelandic immigrants. Their journey across the Atlantic and their establishment of a self-sustaining community in the face of adversity is a remarkable tale of human spirit and triumph.
Today, we can appreciate the legacy of New Iceland through the thriving Icelandic communities in Manitoba and the lasting impact they have had on the development of Western Canada. Their contributions in agriculture, governance, and cultural preservation continue to shape the region's identity and remind us of the importance of embracing diversity and celebrating our heritage.

In 1875, Icelandic immigrants established a colony on the southwest shore of Lake Winnipeg. The timing and location of New Iceland was not accidental. Across the Prairies, the Canadian government was creating land reserves for Europeans in the hope that the agricultural development of Indigenous lands would support the state’s economic and political ambitions. In this innovative history, Ryan Eyford expands our understanding of the creation of western Canada: his nuanced account traces the connections between Icelandic colonists, the Indigenous people they displaced, and other settler groups while exposing the ideas and practices integral to building a colonial society.
