This Arthurian rhyming picture book follows the story of Lancelottie – a fearless knight who loves school, is close to her pet frog Grail, and always gets her chores done.
Her mother, the Queen, is never seen, and 'the Baron' should be avoided at all costs.
Whenever the Baron comes home from his daily quests, Lottie runs up to her room until he falls asleep. That’s when she knows it's safe to sneak into the living room and watch TV.
Sometimes there’s nothing to eat in the house but pet food, and Lottie is late for school, which confuses her best friend Artie greatly. It is only after this, and seeing a boy similar to her get the help he needs on TV, does Lottie find the courage to come forwards and speak up about her home life to a teacher.
Although her life is still difficult afterwards and not everyone understands, this results in Lottie meeting a child therapist/social worker named Nim, who supports Lottie to get her and her mother away from the Baron.
Lottie is wary of Nim at first, but she teaches Lottie how to talk about her feelings, and to trust good adults to meet her needs when she asserts them.
Lancelottie and the Three Scares is a children’s book for child survivors. There are numerous children’s books available for parents which address the 'prevention' of child abuse. Those that explain stranger danger and body autonomy help arm children with the knowledge and confidence to come forward and tell the trusted adults in their life that they are being abused. However, the majority of child abuse perpetrators are already well known and trusted by their victim. For children who have been born into abusive families, these books on prevention may not be applicable, and can even compound feelings of guilt in the child survivor. Some books tell children that there are exceptions to rules about the body, and that it’s okay for parental figures to touch private parts to keep them safe and healthy. While this may be true in a loving and nurturing environment, such simplified messages for children who are being abused at home can lead them to believe that it is normal behaviour.
Children who have only ever known abuse might not always appear to be upset, withdrawn or obviously neglected. They may not always immediately recognise the abuse themselves, so the tell-tale signs of neglect that loving parents and caregivers are told to watch out for are not always apparent. Instead, many abused or neglected children appear to be mature beyond their years, speak about their trauma candidly as if there is nothing wrong with it, and embrace school where they feel more safe - oftentimes seeking teacher’s approval through good behaviour. As a consequence, children with this disposition can be misbelieved or even punished when they disclose their abuse.
This book aims to gently address these sad realities in order to promote greater understanding for such children, and to give these child survivors the courage to speak up. Children are not always believed when they tell, and if their perpetrator is well liked in their community they may face antagonism from their peers and even other adults. While Lancelottie and the Three Scares lightly acknowledges this, the story holds onto the positive message that if the child discloses to trustworthy adult figures they will get the help they need. This aims to alleviate any self-blame or remorse in children for not telling their story sooner, or telling it 'wrong' if they are disbelieved.
This book is aimed at child survivors, so it may not be appropriate for children who have no prior knowledge or experience of abuse. However, my hope is that once mature enough to understand the material, this book could be beneficial to children everywhere, teaching them empathy for those whose home life and experiences do not look like theirs.
The book makes it clear that how her family treats her is not Lottie’s fault, and that she is a lot ‘like you and me’.
