Deep Blue Ocean Waves Crashing Against Majestic Cliffs The Ocean Is Alive: Re Visioning Our Relationship With The Living Ocean

The ocean, with its vastness, mysterious depths, and stunning beauty, has always captivated humanity. It covers more than 70% of our planet, yet we have failed to fully comprehend its significance and treat it with the respect it deserves. In this article, we delve into the importance of re-visioning our relationship with the living ocean and the dire consequences of neglecting its well-being.

Our Neglectful Past

For centuries, humans have seen the ocean as a mere resource to exploit. We have used it as a dumping ground for our waste, overfished its waters, and disregarded the effects of pollution and climate change on its fragile ecosystems. This reckless behavior has taken a toll on marine life, leading to the decline of numerous species and the destruction of coral reefs, which are vital for maintaining the ocean's biodiversity.

The Ocean's Intricate Web of Life

Beneath the ocean's surface lies a complex network of interconnected beings. From tiny plankton to majestic whales, each organism plays a crucial role in maintaining the health and balance of marine ecosystems. The intricate web of life in the ocean is responsible for generating oxygen, regulating climate patterns, and providing sustenance to millions of people around the world.

Impacts of Our Disconnectedness

Our current disconnectedness from the living ocean has resulted in devastating consequences that extend beyond environmental degradation. Coastal communities that heavily rely on fishing suffer from declining stocks, while rising sea levels increasingly threaten the existence of islands and low-lying coastal areas. Furthermore, the destruction of coral reefs disrupts tourism, affecting local economies that depend on this industry.

A Path Towards Healing

Re-visioning our relationship with the living ocean requires a fundamental shift in mindset and action. We must recognize that our well-being is intricately linked to the ocean's health. By adopting sustainable fishing practices, reducing pollution, and actively combating climate change, we can begin to heal the wounds inflicted upon the ocean.

Technology: A Tool for Change

Emerging technologies can also play a significant role in re-visioning our relationship with the ocean. Advancements in marine robotics, underwater exploration, and remote sensing offer valuable tools for monitoring and preserving the ocean's fragile ecosystems. By utilizing these technologies, we can gather valuable data, raise awareness, and develop innovative solutions to mitigate further damage.

Empowering Future Generations

Education and awareness are fundamental in fostering a deeper connection with the ocean. By incorporating marine science into school curricula, organizing beach clean-up campaigns, and promoting sustainable practices, we can empower future generations to become stewards of the ocean. It is crucial to instill in them the knowledge and appreciation needed to protect and restore the living ocean before it's too late.

Re-visioning our relationship with the living ocean is an existential necessity. The well-being of both human and marine life depends on our ability to acknowledge the interconnectedness of our world and take responsible action. By understanding the ocean's importance, harnessing technological advancements, and empowering future generations, we can pave the way for a harmonious coexistence with the living ocean, ensuring its prosperity for generations to come.

The Ocean covers over 70 percent of our planet’s surface and accounts for 97-99 percent of the liveable biosphere. She is the cradle of our existence and the heart of our blue home, a vast, living and breathing superorganism.
The Ocean Is Alive is first and foremost a celebration of the Ocean in all her living splendour. It takes the reader on a fascinating and informative voyage of discovery into the blue heart our planet, from the Ocean’s formation more than four billion years ago and the emergence of life deep below her surface, to the incredible diversity and exuberance we know today. But much more than this, it is a journey of discovery into Ocean consciousness: through the evolution of the senses, the emergence of sentient behaviour, and finally an intriguing exploration of what the author calls ‘Ocean Mind’.
In telling the Ocean’s story Glenn Edney draws on his thirty years experience as an Ocean ecologist, underwater naturalist and professional diver to take us beyond the science and into the depths of what it is like to be an Ocean being. Using a combination of personal experience, stories and insights from others, along with guided visualizations, the author weaves a highly readable and thought provoking tale of an Ocean alive to itself, and alive to anyone willing to ‘take the plunge’.
But no contemporary story of the Ocean would be complete without investigating the current threats to the Ocean’s wellbeing. In addressing these issues the author presents a compelling case for recognition of the Ocean as a living being with intrinsic value far beyond the benefits she provides humanity, and offers a new vision for our relationship with the living Ocean.
